V European Day in Remembrance of Victims of Terrorism - Madrid, Spain
Voice of the Victims Conference in Madrid
Sponsored by The Network of Associations of Victims of Terrorism
On March 11, 2009 Sarri Singer was invited to share her personal story with other victims of terrorism in Europe. Survivors and organizations from France, England, Spain, Ireland, Italy & Holland came together to share their stories. The morning began with an information breakfast at the headquarters of the European Commission to mark the Victims Day in memory of the victims of terrorism. Victims from various European countries shared their experiences with terrorism with the audience and media. We were the only organization invited to participate outside of Europe. After the speakers were finished, audience members, who were survivors and family members were able to share their thoughts as well.
After the conference, the group of victims who came to Madrid joined together in a very special event. Everyone gathers at the entrance of the “Forest of Remembrance” (El Bosque del Recuerdo) in Retiro Park where the tress are planted in memory of the victims of the March 11, 2004 Mardrid bombings. Hundreds of people gathered waiting for the group of survivors, clapping their hands as they arrived and walked through the garden area. Until the end of the ceremony with the reading of the Manifesto, attendees were accompanied by the tune “Por Ellos” live that was performed by the composer Manuel Carrasco. Each victim was given a flower and they walked up a small hill. As the survivors walked up, each were given a flower to place in the trees that lined the walkway on both sides. Finally at the top of the hill, with all the victims together standing words were spoken remembering those that were lost on March 11, 2004.
Later that evening, there was a very special concert. Those in attendance at this conference were survivors, family members who lost loved one, first responders and individuals who assisted in the rescue efforts. The highlight of the evening was the presence of Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia of Spain. It was a very special day and evening filled with many emotions and strong unity with the victims.
